You may have already heard about the benefits of collecting accurate passenger data on public transport. We even touched on the subject in this article, published a few weeks ago.

This data is indeed highly accurate information that only automatic counting systems, via sensors installed in the vehicles, can obtain. But which type of technology is the most efficient? Which system allows a fine analysis of the flow of people? Which sensor is best suited to in-vehicle use?

The evolution of our technologies in transport

More than 30 years ago, Acorel started in the public transport sector with infrared sensors. At the time, this was the only way to count passengers, and it provided satisfactory results.

However, our customers’ needs have evolved and data accuracy, real-time counting and discrimination of different types of passengers have become a real necessity.

3D stereoscopic sensors: Accuracy for the benefit counting

In the last decade, 3D stereoscopic sensors have revolutionised the people counting market. Installed in vehicles or on the ground, these 3D video sensors offer improved counting accuracy thanks to an algorithmic image analysis that tracks movements in the detection field. The system, linked to artificial intelligence, is able to perform bi-directional counting, differentiate between adults/children, wheelchairs, bicycles and is insensitive to parking. This zenithal counting system has been proven to be up to 98% accurate.

Sensor Adaptation for Buses.

Positioned above the door of a vehicle, the sensor allows the collection of attendance data over a precise period of time, in real or delayed time, and by counting both the entries and exits of users.

On the other hand, this technology offers a proof of precision by video which makes it possible to avoid manual counting campaigns which are complicated to set up, expensive and of a very relative precision. It should be noted that this type of counting is compliant with the RGPD since no person can be identified and the images are not stored on the servers.

Our transport sensors:

Acorel offers two types of 3D stereoscopic sensors for public transport:

🚌 Sensor for bus

This latest generation 3D video sensor is specially designed for bus vehicles. Its housing is resistant to various temperature ranges and ensures compliance with the fire safety standards specific to buses.

🚊Sensor for tram, train & métro :

This sensor has the expected reliability and lifetime in the railway environment (MTBF = 500,000 h) and meets, among others, the EN50155 standard. Its robust metal housing offers good protection against mechanical damage.
